shark attack off the coast of santa barbara in california. police say the victim was an expert surfer. he was riding the waves with friends off the santa barbara coast near vandenberg air force base when he was bitten in the upper torso. friends tried to rescue him but they were unable to. >>> tropical storm sandy is gaining strength. it isn't a hurricane just yet but it is expected to become one soon, as it bears down on jamaica later today. a hurricane warning is in effect there, and in some provinces in central and eastern cuba, as well. later this morning montego bay airport will close. also a tropical storm watch is in effect for southeastern florida in the northeastern keys. rob marciano told us a little while ago this may be a storm we have to watch on the northeast, and the east coast of the u.s. coming up later next week. >>> a powerful 6.5 magnitude earthquake in western costa rica centered about five miles from the tourist destination of nicoya. the quake struck around 7:30 last night local time and could be felt 90 miles away. it was followed by a 4.5 aftershock. no word y

retirement home at the california science center. big crowds are expected as "endeavour" snakes its way through the straights of los angeles at a whopping 2 miles per hour. the 12-mile trip will make 46 hours, and it ends tomorrow night. >>> the detroit tigers and san francisco giants are a step closer to the world series. the tigers shut out the oakland aest to advance to the championship series. the giants posed out the reds to reach the nlcs after losing their first two games at home. they had to win three on the road which is pretty darn impressive. their opponents will be decided tonight. the baltimore orioles, beat the yankees 2-1 in 13 innings in the bronx to force a game five in their series. everyone is rooting for the orioles. the washington nationals scored a walk-off win against the st. louis cardinals. that sets the stage for a game five in that series. i was in washington when jason worth hit that home run. washington went bonkers. i swear you could hear the screams on the streets anywhere. very exciting. game five there as well. soledad? >> and how did your red sox do las

it looked like california hadn't put all their paperwork through. california got mad and said no, we did everything by the book. we see this big spike in jobless claims so iteems there's seasonal distortion, something going on. it's the end of the fiscal year. you never know how that might affect things, too. you usually do not see such big moves over two weeks. >> you've been talking about a lot of the moves in housing as well and what was -- or has certainly been in the recent past a major slump. there could be some signs that they're on some recovery for the month of september, construction of new homes. >> strongest since july 2008, up 15% from the previous month, annual rate of 872,000. it has many people hoping that the u.s. housing slump could finally, could timely be here. i saw another report from harvard from its report on housing saying remodeling activity is picking up. we're expecting more people, more money in the bank because they're able to refinance their homes. there's signs of loif in housing. >> interesting. we want to bring in housing wire editor jacob gaffney to joi

". minding your business, california's gas prices rising again over the past 24 hours. the statewide average is now $4.67. this is measured by aaa. it's the highest in the country. some gas stations have been selling gas more than five bucks a gallon. this price spike largely because of refinery and supply problems in california. we're told by gasoline energy experts that they expect the prices to begin to ease but for right now still hurts out there. >>> a u.s. stock futures are flat indicate being markets will open unchanged. stocks closed slightly lower yesterday. there's uncertainty weighing heavily. the international monetary fund lowered its global growth forecast. for the next year expects the u.s. economy to grow at 2%. the eurozone look at that 0.2%. not growing. china 8.2%. looks pretty good. these are all weaker forecasts than their last report in july. for ten years china was growing at 10%. even slowing down a little bit to 7% or 8% and causing concerns. >> as john was talking about a moment ago the presidential race is a whole new ball game according to at least one new poll. t
